This position is located within the VA Western New York Healthcare System at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Batavia, NY. As an armed Police Officer, the employee is responsible for law and order, enforcing Federal and appropriate State, City and local criminal codes and VA Directives and Regulations in the physical protection of patients, visitors and employees.
The major duties and responsibilities include: the preservation of the peace; the prevention, detection, and investigation of crimes occurring on Department of Veterans Affairs controlled property; arrest of violators; the control of traffic; the provision of assistance for citizens in emergency situations, including the protection of personnel, civil rights, and VA-owned or controlled property; assuring compliance with Federal, State, County, and Municipal Laws and Ordinances as they pertain to VA and agency rules and regulations; local criminal codes and VA directives and regulations in the physical protection of patients, visitors and employees; conducting foot patrol and/or vehicle patrol; writing uniform offense reports containing pertinent information which is factual, classified properly, and submits such reports in a timely manner; informing individuals about their rights as suspects and/or witnesses; responding to calls or alarms involving crimes in progress or discovered; questions victims and witnesses at the scene of an incident to determine the reasons for a call for assistance; arrests violators caught in the act or who readily admit to guilt; issuing citations; assists victims of accidents or assaults by providing first aid, and/or calling for medical assistance, or assts in transporting to a specific location for medical treatment; obtains statements; records observations about traffic conditions, vehicle locations, and other pertinent information for accident reports; pursues and apprehends persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; subdues individuals causing disturbance such as in family disputes, disruption of normal working operations; Issuing traffic citations and federal violation notices; Reporting fire and safety hazards detected and taking immediate action; Providing immediate and courteous assistance to patients, visitors and employees; Possessing expertise in the use of unarmed defense and offender restraint as well as non-lethal chemical irritant projector weapon to take action; Performing other related duties, as assigned.
WORK SCHEDULE: Full-Time, 40 hours per week; Variable shifts, weekends and holidays based on agency needs.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Back to topGS-6 Level: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience which equipped them with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the Police Officer. Specialized experience is experience that has been performed independently, under general supervision, and included regularly pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; actually subduing individuals causing disturbances; arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; performing control desk duties; taking charge of a crime or accident scene and conducting long- and short-range investigations; providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; performing criminal investigations and similar work. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in Federal service.
Specialized Experience : Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.
No substitution of education or training may be made for the required specialized experience at GS-6 and above.

1. Applicants must possess a valid, State drivers license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
2. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification for the duration of their employment as a Police Officer.
3. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and graduate a 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty.
4. A character investigation will be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidates honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
5. A medical examination is required and repeated annually. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.
6. Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. Applicants and employees must possess emotional and mental stability. A psychological examination is required and repeated annually. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. A medical condition or impairment is disqualifying only if the condition, for good medical reason, precludes assignment to or warrants restriction from the duties of the specific position.
