Finance Analyst/Associate (3102-80) at New York

Job Description

MDRC is seeking a Budget/Portfolio Analyst for its Finance Department. This 24-person department has dual functions in managing MDRC’s finances: (1) traditional accounting functions, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll and (2) both pre-award and post-award project financial management, including creating business proposals and post-award financial monitoring and reporting to funding sources. The department manages both grants from foundations and large contracts from multiple federal agencies. MDRC currently has about 100 projects with more than 250 separate funding streams. To support its functions, the department maintains automated accounting, timekeeping, and budget and resource management software systems. Staff in Finance work closely with staff at all levels across the organization. While deadline-driven, the environment is open and collaborative.

Responsibilities:

Develop and prepare business proposals/budget materials for new funding opportunities and/or modifications to existing grants and contracts:

  • Review requests for quotes to understand requirements for business proposals.
  • Coordinate with designated program staff to establish requirements and critical dates leading to submission of proposals.
  • Develop budgets, using complex Excel spreadsheets and extracting data from several financial systems.
  • Create final external budget displays.
  • Draft budget narratives.
  • Prepare supporting documents for cost justification.
  • Coordinate/review subcontractor budgets for inclusion in proposals/modifications.

Provide post-award financial management for a diverse portfolio of projects:

  • Interpret provisions in grant/contract documents relating to payment terms, billing, limitations on cost, and requirements for budget modifications and extensions.
  • Prepare monthly bills and financial reports.
  • Devise expense allocation strategies and complete monthly distribution of expenses to various funding streams in multi-funded projects.
  • Coordinate with project staff to monitor need for budget modifications and/or extensions.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree and two years of relevant experience or bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Basic accounting experience and/or background in accounting (as demonstrated by coursework or on-the-job experience) required. Familiarity with nonprofit accounting highly desirable.
  • Experience with federal grants and contracting processes preferred.
  • Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills. Strong quantitative skills a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced Excel skills required. Experience with automated budgeting and accounting systems preferred (e.g., KCI Control for budgeting, Deltek Costpoint, and Cognos for report writing).
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills. Ability to work in fast-paced environment, juggling multiple priorities. Must be willing to work occasional nights/weekends to meet deadlines, especially when proposals are due.
