Consultants must be able to provide expert support in areas including but not limited to:
- Philosophy and background of the CCSS
- Unpacking and analyzing the CCSS
- Backward planning model (Understanding by Design)
- Anchor standards and close reading for literacy across the content areas
- Practice standards and critical thinking skills for Math (Common Core -Math Consultant only)
- Instructional shifts inherent in the CCSS
- Performance assessments
- Writing across the content areas to support conceptual understanding
- Inquiry-based learning strategies
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coach teachers in the implementation of The Common Core State Standards.
- Coach teachers in important instructional strategies that will support all students in becoming college and career ready.
- 75% of the consultants time should be spent in direct contact with classroom teachers in the capacity of reviewing data, co-planning, co-teaching, real-time coaching, or modeling best practices.
- Assist in identifying, acquiring, and organizing available classroom resources to support student achievement and the adoption of the CCSS.
- Additional duties as assigned
Required Skills
- Possess an in-depth understanding of the K-12 Common Core State Standards.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge of the CCSS vertical progression and the alignment to College and Career Readiness Skills.
- Ability to articulate and model literacy skills from the perspective of an historian as well as a scientist (Common core - Disciplinary literacy Consultant)
- Understanding of adult learning theory and experience working with teachers as a mentor, consultant, coach, administrator, or instructional leader.
- Experience presenting professional development seminars to teachers and administrators.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in problem solving and willingness to perform modeling and real-time coaching tasks.
- Demonstrated expertise in effective teaching strategies and experience in preparing and presenting high quality, research- based professional development.
- Organizational and planning skills for setting both short term and long range goals and for coordinating efforts for timely accomplishment of those goals.
- Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated through the respect of peers and the ability to build trusting, collaborative relationships.
- Willingness to continually learn new information and skills related to student learning and achievement, including content areas that may be outside of current skill set
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of technology and instructional media tools and the ability to research and implement best practices
- Flexible and willing to adapt to changes
Educational Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years classroom teaching experience
- Masters degree in Education
